Watch the presentation movie of the COST Action CA16104 Gravitational waves, black holes and fundamental physics (GWverse), in which Gr@v is involved as part of the core group. The movie was produced at the University of Aveiro directed by C. Herdeiro.
Gr@v members contribute frequently to outreach initiatives in order to bring scientific knowledge and developments to the global community. Such initiatives include (see listing of recent activities at the bottom of this page and also our outreach events page):
Summer Academy, for high school students, organised by the Physics Department of Aveiro University;
Master Class in Particle Physics, for high school students, an international initiative in which Aveiro University participated for the first time in the 2011 edition;
Odisseia pela Física; physics colloquia directed to university students (not necessarily of physics), as well as high school teachers and students. The first edition took place in 2010/11;
Science Popularisation activities developed by the Fábrica Ciência Viva centre in Aveiro;
Seminars given in local high-schools to increase public awarness of science and in particular physics;
Some suggestions of outreach videos on science and scientists
A great promotional video for the LISA space-based gravitational wave observatory
A TEDx talk by Carlos Herdeiro on gravitational radiation (in Portuguese).
Pale Blue Dot, by Carl Sagan (with Portuguese subtitles) - a scientific poem.
A unique color video footage on Albert Einstein
Rare footage on the 1927 Solvay Physics Conference
A TEDx talk with Michelle Feynman (Feynman's daughter) and the producer of the BBC shows on Feynman, with some interesting highlights of these shows.
Albert Einstein (History Channel) - a personal and scientific biography of Albert Einstein, with a fascinating and detailed description of the various eclipse expeditions to prove his General Theory of Relativity.
Please contact any of us (emails provided in the People subpage) if you would like to suggest us outreach activities with our participation.
The Aveiro University section of the EPS Young Minds, selected the General Relativity course they organised in the Fall term of 2017 at Aveiro U., in collaboration with Gr@v, as a reference event. This course will be highlighted in a poster presentation at the 7th Young Minds Leadership Meeting to take place in Prague in May 2018. Click "Read More" to find a link to the full poster.
On May 29th, 1919 a joint Royal Astronomical Society and Royal Society expedition led by Arthur Eddington to Principe observed a total solar eclipse, confirming the deflexion of light predicted by the General Theory of Relativity. Eddington at Sundy: 100 years later (E@S) results from a joint initiative of several institutions, including our group, to celebrate the centenary of these observations.
The University of Aveiro and Gr@v join the many worldwide tributes to the life and work of Stephen Hawking. As a small contribution, the U. Aveiro asked Gr@v member C. Herdeiro to write an article for its online news that can be found here. A video statement can be found here (both in Portuguese).
The black hole theorist and cosmologist Stephen Hawking passed away at the age of 76. Stephen Hawking distinguished himself not only as a brilliant scientist, with remarkable contributions such as the discovery of black hole evaporation, but also as an active science communicator with best selling books, most notably A brief history of time.
"SKA days PT" took place last 6 and 7 of February, at Covilhã and Lisbon, an initiative to promote the Square Kilometer Array (SKA) - the world's largest radio telescope - among the Portuguese scientific and business communities.
SKA project has the participation of 19 countries, in the case of Portugal it is via the infrastructure ENGAGE SKA, which is a consortium composed by the Instituto de Telecomunicações, the Universities of Aveiro (Gr@v), Porto and Évora, and the Polytechnic Institute of Beja.
The fourth general assembley of the Portuguese Relativity and Gravitation Society (SPRG) ellected the following new officers: C. Herdeiro (president), J. Natário (vice-president), V. Cardoso (Treasurer), J. Lemos (General Assembley President), F. Mena (First Secretary), J. Costa (Second secretary). These officers appear in the above photograph presenting the 2017 Alberto Prize to M. Zilhão. The remaining officer is J. Rocha ("Fiscal Único").
For the second time C. Herdeiro was the guest interviewee of Porto Canal's "Mentes que Brilham". Watch and listen to the conversation (from minute 18 onwards) (Watch and listen to the first interview) with interviewer Cláudia Fonseca about black holes and some of the research work made at Gr@v in this area.
