Talk on the 2020 Nobel Physics Prize
Watch here a talk on the 2020 Nobel Physics Prize given by C. Herdeiro at the invitation of the Centre for Theoretical and Computational Physics of the University of Lisbon.
Gr@v members contribute frequently to outreach initiatives in order to bring scientific knowledge and developments to the global community. Such initiatives include (see listing of recent activities at the bottom of this page and also our outreach events page):
Summer Academy, for high school students, organised by the Physics Department of Aveiro University;
Master Class in Particle Physics, for high school students, an international initiative in which Aveiro University participated for the first time in the 2011 edition;
Odisseia pela Física; physics colloquia directed to university students (not necessarily of physics), as well as high school teachers and students. The first edition took place in 2010/11;
Science Popularisation activities developed by the Fábrica Ciência Viva centre in Aveiro;
Seminars given in local high-schools to increase public awarness of science and in particular physics;
A great promotional video for the LISA space-based gravitational wave observatory
A TEDx talk by Carlos Herdeiro on gravitational radiation (in Portuguese).
Pale Blue Dot, by Carl Sagan (with Portuguese subtitles) - a scientific poem.
A unique color video footage on Albert Einstein
Rare footage on the 1927 Solvay Physics Conference
Fun to Imagine (and related videos), by Richard Feynman - a genius at work! In particular this one on Magnetism, is a pearl.
Take the world from a different point of view, with Richard Feynman: Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, Part 4.
A TEDx talk with Michelle Feynman (Feynman's daughter) and the producer of the BBC shows on Feynman, with some interesting highlights of these shows.
Albert Einstein (History Channel) - a personal and scientific biography of Albert Einstein, with a fascinating and detailed description of the various eclipse expeditions to prove his General Theory of Relativity.

As support material for highschool textbooks C. Herdeiro discussed with Professor Manuel Fiolhais how one can explain the concept of black hole for highschool students and the 2020 Nobel physics prize.
Gr@v contributed to several media coverages of the 2020 Nobel Physics Prize. Expand to know more.
C. Herdeiro was one of the guests of Jornal 2, of RTP2, on October 6th, to talk about the Physics Nobel prize 2020. See the interview here (from 19:52 onwards).
The Nobel Prize in Physics 2020 was divided, one half awarded to Roger Penrose "for the discovery that black hole formation is a robust prediction of the general theory of relativity", the other half jointly to Reinhard Genzel and Andrea Ghez "for the discovery of a supermassive compact object at the centre of our galaxy." Our group is thrilled by this recognition of Black Hole science by the Nobel Committee and heartly congratulates Roger, Reinhard and Andrea!
Gr@v members António Morais and Felipe Freitas and their students João Pino and Pedro Rodrigues (from left to right on the picture) have participated in the 2020 edition of the CERN masterclass held at the University of Minho and organized by LIP - Laboratório de Instrumentação e Física Experimental de Partículas. The event took place on the 28th of February and on the 6th of March.
Gr@v member C. Herdeiro had the pleasure to discuss some mysteries of the Cosmos, in particular the Big Bang and black holes, with an audience of young, thirsty minds at Colégio de Lamas. Many thanks to all the Colégio de Lamas staff and in particular Professora Maria de Luz Costa for making this possible.
Group members Sonia Anton and Carlos Herdeiro, as well as Tiago Campante from IA and U. Porto, participated in the outreach activity "Café de Ciência", at Fábrica, Centro de Ciência Viva de Aveiro, as part of the conference cycle "À descoberta do Universo" promoted by Tiago Campante.
The seasonal greetings postcard of the Portuguese Physics Society had a little help from Gr@v! Merry Christmas and happy new year of 2020!
Alexandre Correia, Professor at Coimbra University, ended his term as scientific coordinator of the Gravitational Geometry and Dynamics Group (informally dubbed Gr@v) of CIDMA on 16 December 2019. Prof. Correia will cease to be a full member of CIDMA at the end of 2019 by virtue of his move to Coimbra University. The group is very grateful for his leadership. The new elected scientific coordinator is Carlos Herdeiro.
