Gr@v warmly congratulates the Event Horizon Telescope collaboration for the first direct image of a black hole. This discovery has had a worldwide impact, including news coverage in Portugal with the contribution of Gr@v and former Gr@v members.
The image released targeted the supermassive black hole at the heart of the gigant elliptic galaxy M87. A lensed light ring (brigher in the south) is clearly seen, together with a dark inner region: the black hole shadow. The image is the result of Terabytes of data collected at the eight stations of the EHT network collected in April 2017.
Three of the six papers announcing the discovery reference Gr@v's work (Paper I, V and VI), authored by P. Cunha, J. Grover, C. Herdeiro, E. Radu and H. Runarsson, on black hole shadows.
