Black hole spontaneous scalarisation in Physical Review Letters

The paper "Spontaneous scalarisation of charged black holes", co-authored by Gr@v members C. Herdeiro and E. Radu, together with N. Sanchis-Gual and J. A. Font, from the U. Valencia, was published in September 2018 in Physical Review Letters.

This paper shows that the spontaneous scalarisation phenomenon of black holes, recently suggested by other authors (Phys. Rev. Lett. 120, 131103, Phys. Rev. Lett. 120, 131104, see also Phys. Rev. Lett. 120, 131102), falls into a larger universality class. Using a workable example within this class, the paper then demonstrates that the spontaneous scalarization does occurs dynamically. Moreover, the models where this scalarisation occurs allow the first explicit construction of asymptotically flat black holes without any spatial continuous symmetries. Finally, the paper unveils an intriguing similarity between the behaviour of charged black holes and the behaviour of charged water drops.
