Gravitation @ Aveiro University

Welcome to Gr@v

Gr@v is a team of researchers, based at the University of Aveiro, Portugal, working on gravitational physics in the context of astrophysics, cosmology and high energy physics. The group was established in 2010. In January 2015 Gr@v integrated the FCT funded CIDMA research unit (project UID/MAT/04106/2013), as the Gravitational Geometry and Dynamics research group.

Dynamical formation of hairy rotating black holes

In a recent remarkable work just published in Physical Review Letters as an Editor's suggestion, William East and Frans Pretorius (E&P) studied the non-linear growth of the superradiant instability. And the endpoint matches hairy black holes discovered by the Gr@v team. Read here a viewpoint article by Sam Dolan.

New group members

Valério Ribeiro [FCT assistant researcher, PhD 2011 Liverpool John Moores University, UK], Alan Alves [Post-doc, PhD 2015, U. São Paulo, Brazil], Tjarda Boekholt [Post-doc, PhD 2015, Leiden U., Netherlands], João Oliveira [PhD student in collaboration with U. Minho, M.Sc 2016, U.

XXVII ENAA and Ignite IAstro

The XXVII National Meeting of Astronomy and Astrophysics (ENAA) took place on the 20-21 July at the University of Lisbon. Gr@v contributed to the scientific committee (A. Correia) and to the public event (C. Herdeiro) under the Ignite format.

Carolina Benone's PhD exam

Carolina Benone successfully defended her PhD thesis "Scalar fields in black hole spacetimes and analogues". The exam took place in U. Federal do Pará, in Belém, Brazil, on July 14th 2017. The thesis was supervised by Luis Crispino (UFPa) and Gr@v member C. Herdeiro. Congratulations Carolina!

Strong Gravity Universe in Azores

Group members P. Cunha and C. Herdeiro were two of the participants in the "Strong Gravity Universe" workshop, in S. Miguel island, Azores. This meeting was co-sponsored by the GWVerse COST action and StronGrHEP RISE network.

Gr@v research in "90 segundos de Ciência"

"90 seconds of Ciencia" is a daily programme of the National Public Radio, Antena 1. Hear in this link the contribution of Gr@v researchers to this excellent show that makes accessible to a larger audience the research made in Portugal, across all fields of knowledge.

Numerical data and Mathematica notebooks for quasi-Kerr hairy black holes

Here, the numerical data described in Fig. 4 of the paper "Kerr black holes with synchronised hair: an analytic model and dynamical formation", arXiv:1706.06597, together with an explanatory pdf file and two Mathematica notebooks, is made available for public use.

The data consists of four solutions of Kerr black holes with scalar hair and six solutions of Kerr black holes with Proca hair. These families of solutions were first presented in the papers:

@ LIGO Livingston

Gr@v members Pedro Cunha and Carlos Herdeiro at the LIGO LIvingston Control Room, in the state of Louisiana, USA, during a visit to the site. More exciting news should be announced in the summer by the collaboration!
