Testing General Relativity with Extreme Mass Ratio Inspirals

It has been believed that supermassive black holes (SMBHs) in the majority of nearby galaxies in the universe are powered by accretion flows. Observational evidence and many numerical simulations show of elliptical galaxies have revealed a surprising fact, in the densest regions of massive elliptical galaxies the hot gas rotates very slowly.
A team of Gr@v Ph.D. students led by José Ferreira, featuring also Manuel Mariano and Nuno Santos participated in the European Researchers Night at Fábrica, the Aveiro outreach science centre. Amongst the attractions, there was the lensing effect due to a black hole that caught the public's attention.
Sergio Xavier, who obtained his Ph.D. from U. Federal do Pará, Brazil, under the supervision of Prof. L. Crispino in August 2024, received a best poster award in the XLII Brazilian National Meeting on the Physics of Particles and Fields. The poster was on work in collaboration with our group.
Three Gr@v members appear in the 2024 updated science-wide author databases of standardized citation indicators, commonly known as the Stanford University ranking of top 2% scientists in the world. The top 100 scientists in Portugal, from the same raking, features one CIDMA and Gr@v researcher.
Group get together to cellebrate Prof. Darío Nuñez, from UNAM, Mexico City, one year visit (Oct 2023 - Sep 2024). Many thanks Darío for the wonderful discussions, positive energy and dynamics. We hope you come back soon!
On Wednesday 18, we gathered for a dinner in town to celebrate our many visitors. While Víctor Jaramillo (University of Science and Technology of China), Raimon Luna and Milton Ruiz (both from University of Valencia) joined us for a week, we also welcomed longer term guests Ana Bokulić (University of Zagreb) and Razieh Ranjbar (Ferdowsi University).
We construct and explore Noether charge-swapping structures of boson stars, drawing inspiration from similar configurations of non-topological solitons in Minkowski space (Charge-swapping Q-balls). The resulting structures are dynamic, with a multipolar structure and both positive and negative Noether charges within a star.
We analyze the dynamics of a collisionless kinetic gas propagating in the exterior of a rotating Kerr black hole. We focus on the phase space region corresponding to orbits that are bounded in space.
The XVII Black Holes Workhop will take place at the U. Aveiro, on the 19-20 December 2024. More info here.
